Beginner’s Choice: The Birthday Specials

Birthdays are not just to remind us that we are one year older. They are occasions to celebrate with some small detail and to give thanks. We celebrate with those closest to us and who are part of our life.

Last week I went to the supermarket to buy pork knuckles. I asked for five as I was buying for someone else as well. The supermarket staff who was serving me looked at me when I said that I wanted five and she said: “Is it your birthday?” I suppose she assumed that I was hosting a party.

Cool cakes

We had a birthday celebration this week. The cake was a home-made frozen yoghurt cake with a granola base and fruits on top. There were home-moulded chocolate ducks and shells around the cake. Gen had a lot of fun making them. The cake was really special!

Golden moments pumpkin dessert

My cousin Siri said that she loves pumpkin buad chee dessert. It’s one of the easiest Thai desserts to make. I had some palm sugar in the fridge so I made some.

I gave instructions on how to make it to a friend who was looking for a pumpkin dessert recipe.

  • Cut some pumpkin into small sticks and boil until cooked.
  • Then boil some coconut milk with some water and a pinch of salt.
  • Add palm sugar (to taste) and stir until dissolved.
  • Add a piece of pandan leaf for fragrance (optional)
  • Add the pumpkin sticks to the coconut milk.

This dessert can be served hot or cold. It’s also nice with crushed ice.  It’s similar to bobo cha cha.

Birthday noodles

Noodles are a must for birthday celebrations as they symbolize longevity. Fishball noodles are good and simple to cook. It can be a one-dish meal by adding vegetables (like Chinese cabbage) to the noodles.

Boil the noodles and set aside

Boil the fishballs and set aside

Fry some minced garlic in oil

Fry the vegetables

Add the fishballs and stir

Add the noodles

Mix 3 tablespoons of soya sauce with 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce to add to noodles. You can add a bit of fish sauce to add more flavour

Birthdays are for enjoying with family and friends, so it’s good to keep the meal simple.

Have a great week ahead.
