Student Special: French Night

It’s always a joy to have exchange students round for dinner. They are always appreciative of home-cooked food. It’s also a joy when they offer to cook their own cuisine. Berenice commented last night that it was so nice to have a familiar French meal in Singapore. I understand her completely. I missed Asian cuisine when I was studying abroad. It motivated me to learn to cook.

Berenice is Valentina’s friend. Valentina is from Colombia. I shared a flat with some Colombian students when I was in London eons ago. It was nice to meet a Colombian student in Singapore. Somehow I have ended up being a student again, and I can connect well with other students over study stress.

Berenice is French. She brought Erika, a German student, to help her cook the meal for The French Night. I can’t say that I am familiar with French cuisine, although my maternal grandmother was half French. Berenice prepared a beautiful menu. We discovered her artistic streak.

There were a lot of people in the kitchen. The highlight of the dinner were the crêpes flambées with rum.

We all enjoyed the homey French meal and the lively conversation. Berenice tried to convince us that le Rock is a national French dance, but we were quite convinced that it’s actually the swing (dance). Apparently, le Rock is extremely popular in France. Erika told us a bit about ballet and Baroque dance. We certainly had a cultural evening.

Have a great week ahead.
