Beginner’s Choice: Home-cooking

A friend mentioned in a talk a couple of weeks ago that many young people she knows told her that they never have home-cooked food, that’s why they love going to her place because they get to have home-cooked food.

It made me feel a bit sad that they are not only missing out on home-cooked food, but that they are also missing out on the family time that comes with home-cooked meals.

Last National Day while I was away in Malaysia, Belinda sent a photo of her family’s National Day meal. It had the all time Singapore favourites: chicken rice, steamed fish, and sweet and sour pork (featured photo). It was a celebration dinner at home. I thought it was a really nice detail for the family. Her children will always have memories of the good food they had growing up and the family time at the dinner table.

Chicken rice

Last week I went over to my mother’s house for lunch. My mother cooked prawn fried rice and I made spicy pomelo salad. It was fun spending time in the kitchen. A meal is a social occasion. A home -cooked meal is a family occasion. My mother enjoys seeing everyone tucking into the food with a good appetite.

We had a Spanish dinner last night and we had friends over. Maria, a Spanish exchange student, asked me what was my favourite Spanish dish. I said tortilla de patatas (potato omelette), she said it was hers as well. Sometimes the simple dishes are the best dishes, especially if they are the traditional food of the country, like chicken rice in Singapore.

Have a great week ahead.
