A cake for Christmas is quite appropriate because Christmas is a birthday celebration. Mothers have a central role in birthdays as they are the ones who gave birth to the birthday celebrants. Mothers also have a major role in deciding the menu for family celebrations.
My mother decided that we will not have turkey this Christmas. She is cooking Teochew prawn porridge, because my youngest brother said he likes it and hasn’t had it for a long time. It makes sense for a mother to serve what her children like, rather than what is traditional and which nobody really likes.
I decided to make Thai pomelo salad or yum som-o which my mother likes, and since I like traditions, I decided to cook ee-fu noodles with ham. My brother was a bit confused by the menu and decided that he will bring some chicken and vegetables to complete the meal. We have a lot of Christmas cake so we will serve it with ice cream.
Nelly’s cake with a Christmas tree on it was a work of art and it was a pity to cut it up, but it was yummy. Ham has been very popular this year, especially since there has been a shortage of turkeys. There have also been more celebrations with finger foods this year. Drinks become important when the meal consists of finger foods. Barley with lemongrass, tea with orange squash, lemongrass tea, and mango juice with Sprite are some drinks which go well with finger foods.
May you have a Happy Christmas and may all your celebrations be joyful and peaceful.
