Beginner’s Choice: Celebrating with Cakes

It has been a while since the last post, and that means that it has been a busy time for Homskil. There have been several runs of the Homskil’s Homemaking 101 courses and other customised courses.

In the most recent course, a young participant who is preparing to get married had a request, she wants to learn how to bake so that she can bake a birthday cakes. It’s a good plan. I still remember the birthday cakes I had when I was a child. Participants of the Homskil courses are preparing to create family legacies that they will pass on to the generations to come. It’s a project to celebrate family life.

Recently, I was asked to help with planning a birthday celebration for lady who was turning 100. My friends and I did a presentation of 100 years of Singapore in photos. The last few photos were of a famous hawker centre and of local dishes. It was a hit with the seniors. It brought back memories of their favourite dishes. The seniors were particularly excited when they saw cheng teng.

A few months ago, I was talking to an elderly gentleman who had good memories of old school butter cake. He wasn’t sure if the cake shop his friend ran was still around. When a friend’s mother heard about it, she decided to bake butter cake for him. He was very moved.

I thought of featuring some birthday cakes and desserts in this post.  A birthday cake that left a lasting impression was a piano-themed ice cream cake for someone who loves music. Pecan pie appears at least once a year in some homes. It’s commonly served at holiday meals (Thanksgiving and Christmas) in the US. Pecan pie is nice on its own, but it is even nicer with vanilla ice cream. Blueberry cheesecake and carrot cake are two favourite cakes for many.

All the cakes featured in this blog were baked/made at home. There is a joy that comes with baking, and there is something very homey in the aroma of freshly baked bread and cakes.

Have a good week ahead.
