Beginner’s Choice: Home Fine Dining

Home cooked meals and fine dining don’t seem to go together intuitively. But there is no reason why you can’t have fine dining at home. I was talking to a classmate recently who told me that her father is a chef. I said that the food at her home must be good. To my surprise, she said that her father doesn’t cook at home!

If you have good cooking skills and a good sense of style, you can start a tradition of fine dining at home. Elena is amazing when it comes to designing fine dining menus and creating a theme for each celebration. Dining etiquette classes are useful for dining out and for dining at home, especially if you have guests over for formal dinners.

One of my favourite dishes is risotto, which is actually a homey dish. There is nothing more comforting to me than rice cooked in broth, but when it is elegantly plated and topped off with succulent prawns, it is worthy of a place at a celebration dinner.

A fine dining meal at home can be special and not overly expensive. Salmon is for special occasions at home. We don’t have salmon often. I used to like going to a coffee shop in the Tanjong Pagar area, which had a stall that served really good teriyaki salmon at a reasonable price. There was always a long queue. I liked to watch the chef toss the salmon in the wok with so much skill, something I wouldn’t try at home.

Baked almond crusted salmon is definitely a good choice for a celebration dinner. Honey garlic lemon salmon is also one of my favourite recipes.

With Christmas around the corner, it’s time to think of the Christmas menu. A turkey meal has always been a Christmas tradition, but it is not everyone’s favourite, although I actually enjoy cooking turkey. It’s a challenge to make a big turkey juicy.

Have a great week ahead.
