When I think of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur and Johor usually come to mind. I have fond memories of growing up in Kuala Lumpur and of spending study weekends at a beach in Johor as a teenager. But Peninsula Malaysia is only a part of Malaysia. I have not been to Sabah and Sarawak, which make up East Malaysia.
I met Feisan online when I was giving a HomSkil course. She was still a student then and was doing her internship at a law firm. She has been working in Sabah for a year and will be returning to Kuala Lumpur soon. Her photos of the fruits and vegetables in Sabah have made me understand why she has healthy eating habits. Her dishes are always colourful, with lots of fresh vegetables.
Last week Feisan sent some photos with the following note: “I made some “Crystal Dumplings” with my aunt last night. These are my current favourite kuih. When my aunt said she’s making some for breakfast, I volunteered to help.
The filling is a humble mixture of sengkuang (or turnip in English), carrots, and caramelised garlic.
This morning, she steamed them for about 15 minutes. To serve, she added sesame seeds, spring onions, and more caramelized garlic!”

I was wondering why I have never been to Sabah or Sarawak, and they are so close by. Perhaps now is the time for me to plan a trip. At this stage of my life, I am more attracted to nature than to cities. I have spent too much time walking in shopping malls! It’s far healthier to walk in parks and in nature reserves.
Have a good week ahead.
